Living with a Cat? Things you should know

For many cat lovers in Dubai, sharing a home with a cat isn't just about having a pet, it's about having a family member. Cats bring warmth, personality, and a special kind of companionship. But living with a cat also comes with responsibilities, especially regarding proper healthcare.

Regular Nutrition and Balanced Diet

Cats are natural carnivores, and their diet should reflect that. Feeding your cat a balanced, high-protein diet made specifically for cats is the first step toward good health. Avoid human food, especially chocolate, onions, or dairy, which can be toxic.

Hydration is Key

Cats are notorious for not drinking enough water, which can lead to urinary tract or kidney issues over time. Make fresh water available at all times, and consider a cat water fountain to encourage drinking.

Hygiene, Grooming and Preventive Care

Regular brushing helps prevent hairballs and keeps their coat healthy, and dental hygiene matters too. Keep vaccinations current, maintain regular deworming and flea control even for indoor cats, and don't skip annual wellness checks (senior cats may need bi-annual visits).

Recognizing Signs of Illness

Cats are experts at hiding discomfort. Watch for changes in eating or drinking habits, unexplained weight change, vomiting or diarrhea, lethargy or hiding more than usual, frequent urination or litter box accidents, bad breath, or coughing and sneezing.

Mental and Emotional Health

Living indoors can sometimes lead to boredom or stress. Provide interactive toys and scratching posts, spend daily playtime with your cat, and offer window perches or cat trees for enrichment.
